Free mode

Free mode steers the pointer a step at a time with h, j, k and l, for spots the grid can't land on.

Moving

Press v from the grid, bisect or hint mode, or start with stochos --free. A crosshair marks the pointer, and the step size shows in the top-left corner.

key moves
h Left
j Down
k Up
l Right

Each press moves 25 pixels, and holding a key keeps moving. = triples the step and - divides it by three. From 25, = goes to 75, 225, then the 500-pixel cap. - goes to 8, 3, then 1.

Act as anywhere else: Space clicks under the crosshair, and the arrow keys scroll. Backspace goes back to the mode you came from, and c to hint mode. Free mode doesn’t drag. For that, use the grid.

Try it here

Steer onto Send
keys·Focus the screen, then steer with h j k l.
Focus the screen and type. The screen stands for a 1920 × 1200 display, and a step of 25 is 25 of its pixels. The crosshair starts in its middle.

Where it starts

from the crosshair starts
The grid On the cell or spot you picked, or the pointer if you haven’t.
Bisect mode In the middle of the region.
Hint mode On the selected target, or the pointer.
--free On the pointer.
--free-center In the middle of the screen.

The grid moves the pointer to the middle of the screen as it opens. v before any letter starts there too.

Settings

config.toml
[free]
left = "h"
down = "j"
up = "k"
right = "l"
fast = "="
slow = "-"
base_speed = 25
fast_multiplier = 3.0
slow_multiplier = 3.0
min_speed = 1
max_speed = 500

base_speed is the step free mode starts with, in pixels, and min_speed and max_speed bound it. fast_multiplier multiplies the step, and slow_multiplier divides it.
