Fitting the screen
A video is rarely the screen's exact shape. The scale mode decides whether phonto crops it, letterboxes it, stretches it or leaves it at its own size.
Scale modes
shell
phonto ~/Videos/harbour.mp4 --scale fit| mode | what you see |
|---|---|
fill |
The video covers the screen and keeps its shape. What overhangs the edges is cropped. The default. |
fit |
The whole video shows and keeps its shape, with bars along the sides it doesn’t reach. |
stretch |
phonto stretches the video to the screen’s shape. Nothing is cropped, and the picture distorts. |
center |
The video at its own size in pixels, in the middle. A smaller video leaves a border, and a larger one is cropped. |
The mode applies to every display.
Choosing one
fill suits most wallpapers, since footage rarely has anything at its edges you’d miss. fit is for when the whole frame matters. center is for pixel art, and for videos made at the screen’s exact resolution, which it shows pixel for pixel.
